When planning to launch or build your fashion brand there are many things to put into consideration, such as building a business structure, model, finance, designing, sourcing, marketing and identity.

A brand identity is the entire experience of your brand, not just the visuals, but rather its core, its foundation, integrity and values.

Branding is about fashioning an emotional experience for your target audience. Great branding offers acceptance, provides a sense of comfort, and yet challenges a customer.  Branding inspires a customer on a level such that they want to connect with you.

Having an idea about the type of brand you what to build before the launch is helpful and understanding the qualities required to implement such vision is crucial.

  • What will your brand be known for?
  • What does your brand stand for?
  • What is your brand’s point of view?

These characteristics need to be reflected throughout your entire business in order for your customers to trust you.

It’s impossible to have comprehensive knowledge of the twists and turns and ways your brand will evolve over time, but setting the cornerstones for fashion brand identity at the beginning will allow your brand to grow into a more dynamic and robust version of itself season after season.

Brand Naming (#Branding)

One of the most important branding decision you will ever make is what you name your business, product or service. A brand is a complex thing to parse but the name given to a brand is what keep resonating in the mind of people. Good ideas and quality products are important for brand success but in the long run, the brand name is what bears the perception. It is the brand name that first differentiate one brand from another. It speaks*, bear and portray the values of the brand. Now, does your brand name ring a bell? What message does your brand name convey? Brand name comes in different forms/shades and there are no stringent rules in naming your brand. It can be flexible. A brand can be named after the founder e.g Dangote, geographical location/country or even based on the business operation. Naming your brand can be a tough task and a difficult decision to make. Here are few guidelines to help you out;

First, the meaning of component words in your brand name is essential to success. Never give a name without thinking it through. In naming, avoid over-used descriptive titles e.g first, top. There are a lot of brands already using these words. Be creative! Suspense in business is not usually good. Your brand name should not keep people in suspense as to what the business is about. Always consider the environment in which your brand operates. Make sure the name is operationally, socially and culturally acceptable. Also, in line with the business environment context, THINK INTERNATIONAL. Names can have different meanings in other culture. Never steal/copy another brand name, especially well known brand names. If discovered, you could have a law suit on your hands. Religion can be very sensitive therefore you should be careful about coming up with names that have religious implication. Avoid frivolity! Naming your brand is a serious decision to make. Check on the quality of the brand name and never fool around with it. Simplicity and pleasantness is always a deciding factor to customer attraction/repulsion. It should sound right and easy to write. Never forget that brands don’t only exist offline but also online. Check the availability of the name as a domain on the Internet. A brand name says a lot about the brand, make sure the brand name is suitable for visuals- graphics and product designs. SELF DISCIPLINE (#StandOut)

Character will not reach its best until it is controlled, harnessed and disciplined. Self discipline is about doing the right thing, at the right time and in the right manner in order to achieve certain results. Self discipline is concerned with self control in different forms. It has to do with going against the norm or natural desires of an individual. Self discipline can be applied to different aspects of life such as financial, emotional, career, health, spiritual, educational and so on. In pursuit of true success, self discipline is needed to keep us moving on especially during challenging periods. Nothing of value happens without self discipline and only self discipline can take you to the top of your success ladder. Sometimes, it is easier to make plans, wish or even talk about things but self discipline is required to execute effectively and completely. Self discipline is the character trait that keeps successful people at the top. Self discipline can be difficult to imbibe but it must be learnt and practiced gradually until it becomes a trait.

You cannot experience true success without self discipline. For you to attain the peak of your career; knowledge and consistent practice are important but you can only achieve these via self discipline. There are no shortcuts to true success, no painless way to excellence and no prize without paying the price. Positvity, endurance and persistence are key ingredients of self discipline. According to research, 80% of all sales are made after the fifth call in the same prospect. Persistence pays! The only way we can develop new habits is through self discipline. Self discipline can be learnt and practiced so as to develop new habits. These can be achieved via observation, imitation and repetition. Most time, habits cannot be easily stopped but can be replaced by new ones. Observation will make you know the habits you want to cultivate and those you want to change. Imitation is the key aspect of self discipline whereby you copy and inculcate new habits. Before you can replace habits successfully then you must practice the newly imbibed habits continuously and repeatedly. Repetition leads to mastery. Finally, the choice is yours! Self discipline may seem difficult but it’s worth it. No true success comes without self discipline.

Entrepreneurial Pursuit (#StandOut)

An Entrepreneur is someone who takes upon himself or herself a new venture/enterprise and takes full responsibility for the outcome. Entrepreneurs usually emerge from the combination of opportunities and people well positioned to take advantage of them. They succeed due to their passion for outcome which leads them to organize available resources in new and more valuable ways. Entrepreneurs must manage all the factors of production in an efficient and effective manner. Hard work, intelligence, knowledge and creativity are indispensable to a successful entrepreneurial pursuit. Entrepreneurship is often difficult and tricky, as many venture fail. Leadership, management ability and team building remain essential. Making the choice on becoming an entrepreneur can be a challenge unto itself but entrepreneurship can be highly rewarding. An entrepreneur must have the right and positive attitude towards risks as well as unfavorable situations. One of the most important key to a successful entrepreneurial pursuit is discovering a market niche not yet covered. Entrepreneurs must also do things that distinguish them from others. Long term success will be defined by the ability to be different, unique and better than other competitors.

Successful entrepreneurs are people who are fully committed to their business venture. Your heart and soul must be committed to your business. Also, you have to be ready to go without treats such as vacations and even necessities such as salary for a long period of time. In order to succeed as an entrepreneur, idea is not enough. There must be a strong desire, drive and determination, also clients must be able to value your product/service and pay for it. Successful people are tenacious; obstacles are temporary barriers to work around. Business is business, do business with strangers as if they were brothers and with brothers as if they were strangers. The most important requirement in your business relationship is your reputation for honesty. Stay honest! Mind your business, but keep your eyes on successful businesses as you may have something to gain/learn from them. In business, sound advices are indispensable but never forget to trust your gut when making decision at ‘cross roads.’ Your association determines the level of your success. Hire wisely, partner rightly and network properly. Always treat people cordially. Finally, you only become an entrepreneur via practice. Business ideas are definitely not enough, you need to learn, be ‘street wise’ and ‘work it out.’

NEGOTIATION (#StandOut)

Successful negotiation is indispensable to successful living. We negotiate on most important things in life. Successful negotiation is an art form that comes naturally to some, but must be learned by most. Some are naturally good negotiators while most people are poor negotiators. Negotiation can hold anywhere and with anybody. Aside business and contract negotiation, we negotiate with colleagues, superiors, subordinates, family members e.t.c. Negotiation aim to gain something from the other party. Whether we’re building support or overcoming resistance, we’re negotiating. The major elements of successful negotiation are; preparation, effective communication, emotional control and closing the deal. Preparation is key to success. There must be personal development, goals must be set, and limits must be defined and set. For successful negotiation, there must be an agreed clear means and mode of communication. Active listening and body language is an important aspect of communication. Emotional control begins by understanding personal strengths and weaknesses. Most negotiations are won or lost based on emotional tussle outcome. Closing a deal is the ultimate goal of any negotiating process. Agreement should be reached and summarized if possible.

Preparation plays a critical role in negotiation. Starting negotiation before we are ready is setting ourselves for failure. Before negotiations, make sure you plan towards all possible outcomes. Make sure you negotiate with a person that can make decision and close the deal or else you may be wasting your time. Always give the other party, room to make their decisions. During negotiation, do not stare at the other party in the eyes. It always sends a wrong signal. Never look or sound desperate during negotiation as it can be used against you. Regardless of the circumstances, personal attacks will always result in negative outcome. Avoid personal attacks. In communication, speak clearly in terms that the opponent will understand. Your body language must complement your words. Negotiation outcome is either win/win, lose/lose or win/lose. To avoid the ‘lose’ situation, make sure you are in control. During negotiation, remain focused on your goal but be flexible enough in the process. “Know when to hold them and when to fold them.” Finally, do not be manipulated or coerced, use time-outs and think through before making decisions. Learn and practice the art of negotiation.
